Hi folks, we apologize for the short notice of this audition announcement, but with so much going on during the summer, we need to get a good head start on the first show of our next season!
Open auditions will be held for the Village Players’ production of the comedy “Beyond Therapy” by Christopher Durang on the following dates:
- Sunday, June 22, 2014 at 5:30pm
- Monday, June 23, 2014 at 7:30pm
Please note: The above dates have been updated!
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script and are open to all experience levels. The show will be directed by Zachary J. Palmer who directed last season’s “Leading Ladies”.
The farcical comedy focuses on Prudence and Bruce, two Manhattanites who are seeking stable romantic relationships with the help of their psychiatrists, each of whom suggests the patient place a personal ad. Bruce is a highly emotional man who tends to cry easily, a trait Prudence sees as a weakness. Their first meeting proves to be disastrous and the two report back to their respective therapists – libidinous Stuart, who once seduced Prudence, and eccentric Charlotte, who stumbles over the simplest of words, references the play Equus as a good source of advice, and interacts with Bruce and all her patients with the help of a stuffed Snoopy. Clearly the two are more troubled than their patients. Charlotte suggests a revised ad, which once again attracts Prudence, but this time she and Bruce manage to get past their initial loathing and discover they actually like each other. Complications ensue when Bruce’s jealous live-in lover Bob decides to assert himself and do everything possible to maintain his status quo.
There are six characters in the play. Descriptions are as follows. Ages given are based on the character descriptions, but actors of other ages would be considered, based on their ability to play the listed ages.
Bruce (M, late 20s to mid 30s) A friendly, open-minded, highly emotional bisexual man whose own American dream is that he can have a wife and kids and occasionally Bob (his live-in lover).
Prudence (F, late 20s to mid 30s) Reserved and structured, but has her insecurities. She hasn’t given up on the idea that she could find the perfect man… yet.
Stuart (M, any age) Prudence’s libidinous therapist who has slept with most of his patients. He has a macho exterior but suffers insecurity because he is no good in bed.
Charlotte (F, any age) Bruce’s therapist- sweet and well intentioned, but completely scatterbrained and highly eccentric.
Bob (M, late 20s to mid 30s) Bruce’s live-in lover who is extraordinarily jealous of Bruce’s desire to date and eventually marry a woman while keeping him on the side.
Andrew (M, late teens to late 20s) A waiter with a dark edge.

CREW MEMBERS & NEWBIES:
Audition nights are a perfect time to come out, meet the director, and express your interest in helping out backstage, be it in the role of a stage manager, lights & sound operator, concessions, or whatever else you might like to do.
They’re also GREAT for first-timers to come out and observe how things are done, maybe express interest in being a helper, or read for a part! We almost always cast at least one person who’s never been on stage before. You never know what can happen!
