SYNOPSIS
Drama. Vivian Bearing, Ph.D., a renowned professor of English who has spent years studying and teaching the brilliant and difficult metaphysical sonnets of John Donne, has been diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer. Her approach to the study of Donne: aggressively probing, intensely rational. But during the course of her illness—and her stint as a prize patient in an experimental chemotherapy program at a major teaching hospital—Vivian comes to reassess her life and her work with a profundity and humor that are transformative both for her and the audience.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Dr. Harvey Kelekian (Male, 50s–60s) | Chief of Oncology. Professional, authoritative, and detached. A man devoted to science, often at the expense of empathy. This role will double as Mr. Bearing
Jason Posner, M.D. (Male, late 20s–30s) | Young medical researcher and former student of Vivian’s. Brilliant but emotionally stunted. Obsessed with data and the intellectual challenge of disease.
Susie Monahan, R.N. (Female, late 20s–30s) | Vivian’s nurse. Genuine, kind, and grounded. She provides the emotional warmth missing from the sterile medical world around Vivian.
E.M. Ashford, Ph.D. (Female, 60s–70s) | Initially presenting as hospitable, a loving father, and a doting husband, his uncouth nature is gradually revealed, progressing to a neurotic Neanderthal.
Technicians / Clinical Staff / Students (All genders, 20s–40s) | Smaller ensemble roles portraying residents, lab techs, and orderlies. Contribute to the rhythm and realism of the hospital setting. These roles will also assist with the movement of stage pieces and props.
